North Texas could soon see a new major player in commercial air travel. The city of McKinney is making bold moves to bring commercial flights to McKinney National Airport, and momentum is building. With over $300 million in public funding now secured — including a recent $200 million commitment from the Texas Legislature local leaders are moving quickly to turn this long-discussed vision into reality. McKinney officials believe the region’s population growth and increasing demand for air travel have created the perfect environment for a new airport to thrive. The city, which currently owns and operates McKinney National, is planning a full commercial terminal that could welcome up to 18 gates over time. While Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Dallas Love Field have long dominated air travel in the area, both are reaching capacity. That opens the door for McKinney to offer a much-needed alternative for North Dallas and Collin County residents one that’s closer, less congested, and potentially more convenient. City officials have already begun engaging with airlines, and one major carrier is reportedly in “advanced discussions” to become the airport’s first commercial partner. The proposed terminal would be located on the east side of the airport, with construction potentially starting as early as 2026. Officials are optimistic that flights could begin within the next few years, depending on regulatory approvals and airline partnerships. McKinney Mayor George Fuller says the project is more than just an infrastructure upgrade — it’s an economic engine. The commercial airport could create thousands of jobs, attract new businesses, and support the ongoing growth of North Texas. As the funding rolls in and airline interest grows, the question is no longer if McKinney will have a commercial airport but when.
